Award-winning equine photographer Barbara D. Livingston turns her attention to Standardbred horses of distinction in Standardbred Old Friends. From Sweden to southern California, she captures the heart and soul of 43 horses, their careers and lives now largely behind them. The devotion of those who care for them shows in the bright eyes and trusting nature of these remarkable horses, brought to life in Livingston s vibrant and heartwarming photos. Their inspiring stories are told by Ellen Harvey. Livingston continues her tribute to horses that once captured our imaginations but have long since disappeared from the spotlight. Her first two books in the Old Friends series, Old Friends and More Old Friends, portrayed senior Thoroughbreds. For Standardbred Old Friends, she photographed trotters and pacers – from the multi-millionaire Mack Lobell, living in luxury on the shores of Lake Malaren in southern Sweden, to the modestly talented pair, Monterey Rebel and Saddle The Wind, who pace alongside Thoroughbreds at California s Santa Anita Park. With stories by Ellen Harvey, the trusting and tractable Standardbred, descended from ancestors who trotted to church on Sunday and worked the fields on Monday, is represented through the lives of these horses. Some are agile and still working, some content with a good scratch, and all loved by the people who ensure their lifelong care and dignity.
