Learn more about FARRIER DIRECT
*Please note this program is in development, and not currently implemented.
The United Horse Coalition is pleased to present “Farrier Direct.” Farrier Direct is a program aimed at helping equine owners who are having a temporary struggle to afford proper Farrier care for their equines. Farriers would be reimbursed up to $300 per equine after the work is completed and a reimbursement form is submitted. It would be up to the farrier’s discretion as to which owner would be eligible.
Any farrier interested in this program would need to be a member of the AFA in good standing. To be a part of the program farriers would indicate their interest via a form on the AFA website. They then would have an onboarding conversation with the designated Farrier Direct contact in order to fully understand the program. This conversation should take no more than 10 minutes.
Going forward there are no recertification forms; the farrier just needs to remain in good standing with the AFA.
All claims would come directly from the farriers. The farrier is the one with the relationship with the client and they can determine if the client is in need of this program. Client needs include times of crisis or life-changing events such as divorce, death of a family member, change in income due to job loss, etc.
The program is for immediate need/welfare and is not intended for competition horses or those with extensive podiatry needs. It would be a one-time reimbursement to help an owner get back on their feet.
Once determined that the client is eligible the farrier simply fills out the reimbursement form on the AFA website and submits that along with their invoice. The farrier is then directly reimbursed. If the farrier has any questions beforehand they are able to contact the designated Farrier Direct contact prior.
There would be numerous benefits to the equine community. Farriers can feel more comfortable going to help a horse in need if the owner may have difficulty paying. Equines are more likely to get the care they need, when they are in need, and will have a professional checking in on them. Owners can help to take care of their equines when they are having a life crisis themselves.
