UNITED HORSE COALITION EQUINE RESOURCE DATABASE
PLEASE READ BEFORE UTILIZING THE UHC’S EQUINE RESOURCE DATABASE
The UHCERD is a searchable online database/directory of over 1,200 equine organizations (primarily rescues and sanctuaries) that offer any type of service (or financial assistance for that type of service) that assists at-risk equines or those in transition. This includes:
- Behavioral training assistance
- Castration/gelding assistance
- Direct placement services (direct owner-to-owner placement)
- Disaster services
- Educational resources and/or first-time owner mentoring.
- Equine remains assistance/equine disposal and/or rendering services
- Euthanasia procedure assistance
- Grant funding
- Hay or feed assistance
- Large animal technical rescue services
- Law enforcement services/humane investigation
- Legal advice/estate planning services
- Microchipping assistance
- Owner requested rehoming assistance
- Transportation assistance
- Veterinary/medical assistance
- Wild horse preserve
Do your own research while using the UHCERD:
While UHC does audit 501c3 status to ensure that each organization listed in the UHCERD is in good standing, we do not inspect, certify, accredit, or recommend any one organization. UHC strongly recommends that users of this database seek out and utilize those accredited or certified organizations, as these organizations are held to a high standard of care. Any organization listed in the UHCERD as a UHC Member has signed the UHC Member Expectations agreement and is responsible for upholding certain expectations as outlined in the document. UHC also recommends that you research and ask the right questions of any organization listed in this database before adopting or rehoming a horse.

A Home For Every Horse:
A Home for Every Horse was created in 2011 in result to a partnership between the Equine Network, the nation’s leading publisher of equine-related content, and The American Horse Council’s United Horse Coalition. The program provides a resource for 501(c)(3) horse rescue organizations. The A Home for Every Horse program helps connect rescue horses in need of homes, in over 600 rescues across the United States, with people looking for horses. To make the connection between rescue horses and homes, rescue organizations can list their horses for free on Equine.com, the world’s largest horse marketplace, where they can be seen by 300,000 visitors each month.
The Right Horse Initiative:
As a participant in The Right Horse Initiative, the UHC is proud to support a national movement reframing the conversation about equine adoption. The Right Horse Initiative is a collective of industry professionals and equine welfare advocates working together to improve the lives of horses in transition through a dialogue of kindness and respect.
The UHC is working with the Right Horse Initiative to promote the bond between horses and humans. We are good people for good horses, and everyone who loves horses has ownership in this movement.
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance:
The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Foundation (TAA) is a nonprofit organization that serves as both the accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities. Following a detailed application process and careful onsite examination by TAA inspectors and independent veterinarians, each of these facilities was judged to have met or exceeded TAA requirements in the areas of operations, education, horse care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols. These facilities are now eligible to receive financial support from the TAA for the ongoing care of retired Thoroughbreds.
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries:
The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is an international accrediting body for sanctuaries, rescue centers, and rehabilitation centers. GFAS is a charitable organization whose sole mission is to support and strengthen the work of animal sanctuaries worldwide. GFAS certification is recognized globally as the gold standard for animal welfare. Organizations certified by GFAS have met standards of excellence that ensure humane animal care and sound management practices. Individuals and foundations increasingly look for GFAS certification when considering their support of animal sanctuaries.
EQUUS Foundation:
The EQUUS Foundation, also known as Horse Charities of America, is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of horses, enabling the therapeutic use of horses for those in need, fostering the horse-human bond, and educating the public about the horse’s unique ability to empower, teach and heal. Through its Equine Welfare Network, the Foundation provides resources and best practices to equine charities across the United States, connects equine enthusiasts with these organizations, and stimulates volunteerism. The Foundation provides financial support to equine charities operating at the highest standards for the care and use of horses to reduce the unwanted horse population and prevent unwanted horses in the future.
Equine Information Exchange:
Equine Info Exchange is a comprehensive website serving professional horse persons, amateur owners, occasional enthusiasts, and sporting interests alike, supplying visitors with a worldwide view and repository of information for every aspect related to horses. The EIE is a source for content and education, with a specific section dedicated to horse welfare, rescue, and retirement. Re-homing and retirement facilities, plus a list of safety net programs are listed by state. The does not endorse any facility, and visitors are encouraged to research facilities before making donations of any kind.
Our Mission:
Through industry collaboration, the UHC promotes education and options for at-risk and transitioning horses.
Owning Responsibly:
The United Horse Coalition is a broad alliance of equine organizations that have joined together under the American Horse Council to educate the horse industry about the issues facing horses At-Risk, or in transition. We seek to provide information for existing and prospective owners, breeders, sellers, and horse organizations regarding the long-term responsibilities of owning and caring for horses, as well as focusing on the opportunities available for these horses.
